Correct pronunciation and special uses of article “The”.
পোস্টের টাইটেল দেখে অবশ্য বোঝে গিয়েছেন যে আজ আমরা The এর সঠিক উচ্চারণ ও The এর গুরত্বপূর্ণ ব্যবহারগুলো নিয়ে আলোচনা করবো। কখন ‘দি’ আর কখন ‘দ্যা’ উচ্চারণ করতে হয় সেটি নিয়ে প্রায় অনেকেই কম বেশি কনফিউশনে পড়েছেন। কেউ কেউ বলে থাকে “দি” সঠিক আবার কেউ বলে “দ্যা” সঠিক।
কিন্তু আসল নিয়ম হল যে,
🎯 যখন কোন বাক্যে the এর পরের শব্দটির প্রথম অক্ষর vowel হয় ,সেমসয় The এর উচ্চারণ হবে “দি”।
🎯 আর যদি The এর পরের শব্দের প্রথমে consonant থাকে তাহলে উচ্চারণ হবে “দ্যা”
যেমনঃ- The orange, The apple, The answer এখানে The এর পরের শব্দের প্রথম অক্ষর vowel আছে তাই এখানে The এর উচ্চারণ হবে “দি”।
ঠিক একইভাবে, The Cow, The problem, The question এখানে The এর পরের শব্দের প্রথম অক্ষর consonant আছে তাই এখানে The এর উচ্চারণ হবে “দ্যা”।

☑ যখন নির্দিষ্টভাবে কোনও ব্যক্তি, বস্ত অথবা শ্রেণীর কথা বলা হয় তখন সেই নির্দিষ্ট noun-এর অথবা noun-এর মতো কাজ করে এমন word-এর আগে the বসে । singular noun অথবা plural noun সব ক্ষেত্রেই the ব্যবহার করা হয় ।
- I saw the man in the street.

☑ যেকোনো gender [লিঙ্গ]- এর আগে the বসতে পারে ।
- The girl is going to shop.
- The boy stood first in the class.
☑ যা একটাই আছে অথবা একটাই আছে বলে মনে করা হয় তাদের নামের আগে the বসে ।
- The earth moves round the sun.
- The sky was clear this morning.
- The Pope retired this month.
☑ যে noun-এর কথা আগে বলা হয়েছে তার কথা পরে আবার বলা হলে স্বাভাবিকভাবেই সেটাকে নির্দিষ্টভাবে উল্লেখ করা হয় ।

☑ কোনও শব্দসমষ্টি অথবা বাক্যাংশের সাহায্যে কোনও noun-কে নির্দিষ্ট করা হলে তার আগে the বসবে ।
- This is the man I saw in the metro.
- I know the place where the murder was committed.
- The girl in violet will dance now.
☑ আগেই জানা আছে এমন কোনও নির্দিষ্ট noun সম্পর্কে বলতে হলে সেই nounএর আগে the দরকার ।

- Please pass the salt. [ টেবিলে যে লবণ আছে সেটা]
- Go to the doctor. [যে ডাক্তারকে দেখান হয় তার কাছে]
☑ সমগ্র শ্রেণীর প্রতিনিধিত্ব করছে এমন noun-এর আগে the থাকবে ।
- The camel is a gentle animal. [ all camels ]
- The dog is a tame animal. [all dogs]
- The kidney maintains proper water and electrolyte balance. [kidneys]
☑ musical instrument-এর নামের আগে the বসবে ।
- Amjad Ali Khan, Indian classical musician, plays the sarod. [any sarod]
- My sister is learning the sitar. [any sitar]
- The violin is a stringed instrument. [any violin]
☑ সর্বাপেক্ষা ভালো, খারাপ, সুন্দর ইত্যাদি বোঝাতে যেসব adjective [বিশেষণ] ব্যবহার করা হয় [superlative degree] তাদের আগে the বসে ।
- This is the oldest tree in this forest.
- This is the best Chinese food I have ever had.
- This is the worst accident I have ever seen.
☑ only-র আগে the বসে ।
- I am the only son of my parents.
- He is the only doctor in this village.
☑ দ্বীপপুঞ্জ, পর্বতমালা, সমুদ্র, নদী এবং যেসব দেশের নামের সঙ্গে republic, states, kingdom যুক্ত থাকে তাদের নামের আগে the বসে ।

☑ কোনও কোনও adjective শ্রেণীবাচক বিশেষ্যর মতো ব্যবহৃত হয় যেমন dead, poor, rich, disabled, old, middle-aged, young ইত্যাদি । এদের আগে the বসে ।

☑ সাধারণত proper noun-এর আগে the বসে না । যেখানে proper noun [নামবাচক বিশেষ্য] common noun-এর [জাতিবাচক বিশেষ্য] মতো কাজ করে সেখানে তার আগে the বসে ।
- Dr Sen is an F.R.C.S. কিন্তু The Dr Sen who lives down the lane is an F.R.C.S.
- Harun fled the country. কিন্তু This is The Harun who fled the country.
- Once Howrah was called the Sheffield of India.
Dr Sen, Harun, Sheffield ইত্যাদি proper noun-এর আগে the না বসলেও এই sentenceগুলোতে তাদের আগে the বসার কারণ হল বোঝা যাচ্ছে যে Dr Sen, Harun একাধিক আছে এবং Howrah যেন আরেকটা Sheffield |
☑ কোনও পরিবার/ বংশকে সামগ্রিকভাবে বোঝাতে পারিবারিক নাম বা পদবির আগে the বসে ।

প্রথম sentence-এ the দুটি noun-এর আগে একবার ব্যবহার করা হয়েছে কারণ একই ব্যক্তি playwright এবং critic । কিন্তু দ্বিতীয় sentence-এ দুটি noun-এর আগে আলাদাভাবে দুটি the বসেছে কারণ এখানে playwright এবং critic দুজন আলাদা ব্যক্তি ।
